Enoshima

Tokyo 2020

Venue

Enoshima is a small island, around 4km in circumference, in Sagami Bay, Kanagawa Prefecture, within the mainland city of Fujisawa. It is a little over an hour away from Tokyo by train, and there are three stations – including one monorail station – within close proximity of the island.

A popular destination for daytrippers from the capita, Enoshima boasts a beautiful coastline, various attractions such as the Enoshima Shrine and Enoshima Sea Candle, and the opportunity for stunning views of Mount Fuji.

This is the same venue which hosted Sailing at the 1964 Tokyo Olympic Games. A replica of the torch from this Games still remains on the island.

Naturally, several upgrades have been made to the venue 50 years on to ensure that once again it is able to successfully host Sailing at the Olympic Games.

A new sailing centre has recently been constructed in Enoshima, with the aim to increase the legacy from the Games for the local sailing schools and clubs. The 1,276ft bridge linking the island to the mainland has also been upgraded and improved in time for Tokyo 2020; another example of the legacy of the Games for Enoshima.

The venue and marina acts as a refuge for the local fishing fleet during typhoons, and is also home to the coastguard, police and Fujisawa fire brigade.

Enoshima Yacht Club and Odakyu Yacht Club are both within the venue and have kindly accommodated the venue for use by Tokyo 2020.

World Sailing is thankful to all of those who have adapted and accommodated the competition for Tokyo 2020.
